Reflection in the Studio

I have recently began a new series of work based around my dreams, in particular I have been exploring the most significant dreams that connect with bereavement. The creative process allows me to explore the themes of loss, memory and time. This is a personal voyage, delving deep into my own subconscious. Visually I can express what words can not come close to, I dont quite know where this avenue will take me and what I’ll discover along the way – but hey thats what keeps me interested!

The above photo of a piece of work in progress, has captured a reflection of my studio within the acetate, plastic – this has prompted a line of enquiry.

Catalyst for Creativity

I see myself as a catalyst for creativity, enabling others to discover their own individuality. At Hill Farm Primary, in the last academic year I worked with Year 3 on their Pictures, Paintings and Photographs topic. We spent time learning about artist’s techniques & concepts and then took time to design and create their own works of art – portraits. We looked at symbolism and spoke about surrealism. My Studio: My Playground

My studio, at Coventry Artspace, is hugely important to my artistic practice. I mostly spend time creating work, taking it all apart, documenting and staring into space (not always in that order) and most importantly questioning, adding to, developing, reflecting and reinventing the process’s personal to me, in my life as an artist.

Hill Farm Art Auction 2010

Hill Farm Stall at Coventry Market

Working with Year 3 at Hill Farm Primary School, I was invited to share with the children, some of the mysteries behind how artist’s create images and their thinking, in addition to encouraging the children to discover their own capacity to create outstanding paintings, as an expression of their own individual thought processes. In collaboration with some of the finest teachers and the Cre8us programme, we worked together to finish the project on the ultimate high with a showcase at the Herbert Art Gallery followed by an Art Auction at Coventry Market. The children took ownership, from the start and designed their own posters, invites, ‘press boxes’ and chose Barnardos, as a charity they wanted to support. We all had the most amazing day and had so much fun as we witnessed the portraits being sold to parents,teachers and the general public – I have four which on display in my hall. I am so very pleased that £1200 was raised for Barnardo’s! There was a real buzz in the air, a truly memorable project – Thank you to everyone who was involved!

When I moved from a smaller space to a bigger one at Coventry Artspace, the process marked a new phase of self discovery and the re-assessment of ‘live’ sculptural work/assemblages.

What is the recipe for creativity?

Through the Cre8us programme, I have been working with Hill Farm Primary School in Coventry on a variety of projects. I have thoroughly enjoyed getting to know the staff, the children and working in collaboration together. It has been a priveledge to be in a place where children are valued, listened to and are given opportunities to shape their own learning.

Welcome to my website! I decided on a blog based site that allows viewers to stay up to date with my most recent ideas and projects. I aim to keep the website fresh with images and updates. Feel free to comment on my work, or get in touch via the Contact Me page.

The above image was taken in my studio. The stencils are produced from everyday visual communications and then used as a tool to explore meaning and value within contemporary consumer culture. I find them interesting in their own right as symbolic objects which represent the notion of something being of value, whilst being disposable and throw away.
